Pixel's October update has different fixes for different phones

Google's October 6 release sets a 2026-10-05 security patch level for supported Pixel devices, but the published functional fixes target newer models. Pixel 6 owners are also near Google's stated five-year update window.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Google published the October Pixel Update Bulletin on October 6; patch level 2026-10-05 addresses the issues it lists.
  • Android Authority reports functional fixes for Pixel 8 through Pixel 11, while its review found no named functional change for Pixel 6 or Pixel 7; that does not mean those phones receive no security patches.
  • Google's support page gives Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro five years of updates from their U.S. Google Store availability in October 2021, while OTA delivery is phased by device and operator.

The October 6 release is a monthly update, not a new Pixel feature drop

Google published its October Pixel Update Bulletin on October 6 and set the patch level at 2026-10-05. The bulletin supplements the Android Security Bulletin with security patches for supported Pixel devices and lists additional Pixel-specific issues. Google says devices at the 2026-10-05 patch level or later address the issues associated with that level and previous levels. This gives an owner a concrete item to check in Settings: the patch level shown on the phone.

The release also includes functional fixes, but those are not identical across every Pixel model. Android Authority's October 6 report says the named fixes it found target Pixel 8 through Pixel 11. The report says Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 did not have a specific functional fix called out in the notes it reviewed. That is different from saying those older phones received no security patch; the Pixel bulletin still describes security coverage for supported devices. Google says all supported devices will receive this update and encourages owners to accept it.

A short public fix list is not the whole security update

Google’s Pixel bulletin supplements the monthly Android Security Bulletin with Pixel-specific vulnerabilities. It lists six entries for October: two High kernel CVEs and four Pixel-component CVEs. The kernel rows, CVE-2026-56906 and CVE-2026-56936, are elevation-of-privilege issues. Pixel rows include CVE-2026-55330 (Critical, Bluetooth), CVE-2026-56952 (Critical, GDMC), CVE-2026-55307 (Critical, GSA), and CVE-2026-0198 (High, GDMC). Google marks an asterisk beside Android bug IDs whose issues are not public; fixes are generally included in the latest Pixel binary drivers.

The functional patch notes are on a separate Pixel Community page, linked from the bulletin. Android Authority reports a ringtone audio issue for Pixel 8 through Pixel 10, a keyboard visibility issue for Pixel 8 through Pixel 11, and a camera orientation fix for Pixel 11. Those are useful examples of visible bugs, but they do not explain every security change included in the patch. The bulletin's security tables and the feature-fix notes serve different purposes.

The table labels type and severity separately. EoP means elevation of privilege; ID means information disclosure. Critical and High are severity levels, while Bluetooth, GDMC, GSA, and Kernel are affected components. These are security classifications, not new interface features.

For an owner, the audio note concerns ringtone distortion during certain VoIP calls, not all sound playback. The keyboard note is limited to search input fields, and the Pixel 11 camera note concerns saved orientation. If a symptom differs, the report does not say this update addresses it.

The build number varies by model group

Android Authority lists three October builds: CP3A.261005.002.A1 for Pixel 6 and 7 models, the first Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet; CP3A.261005.005 for Pixel 8, 9, and 10 models; and CD1A.261005.003 for Pixel 11 devices. A build string helps match a downloaded image to its model group, but most owners do not need to flash an image manually. Google directs owners to Settings to check the Android version and security patch level.

A patch date can be shared across build strings: it names the security baseline, while the build identifies the model-specific package. Two phones can therefore meet the same bulletin threshold while using different builds. Build numbers are not a universal sequence across hardware groups.

Pixel 6 is near the end of Google's stated support period

Google's update policy gives Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro five years of operating-system and security updates from the date they first became available on the Google Store in the U.S. Google's availability table places both models in October 2021, so the stated window reaches October 2026. The October 6 update falls inside that window. Android Authority says this may be the last monthly update for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but Google's support page gives a month rather than naming this specific bulletin as the final one.

Pixel 7 models first became available in October 2022 and have a separate five-year window. Google includes Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, and the original Pixel Fold in that five-year policy group, while Pixel 8 and later models receive seven years. Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive Android or security updates. Google counts from U.S. Google Store availability, which may differ from other markets; the stated period covers OS and security updates and may also include Pixel Drops. A supported phone can still wait for its carrier rollout, while a model outside its support window should not be expected to receive a later monthly patch.

A release date is not the date every phone installs it

Google’s support page says updates roll out gradually, depend on the carrier and device, and may take a few weeks to arrive. Android Authority’s October 6 report described this release as phased over the coming week. The support page gives Google’s general delivery guidance; the report describes the early rollout for this bulletin.

A missing notification on October 6 did not prove a supported phone was excluded. One carrier may offer the update later than another, and model groups may receive different builds. Google says the phone will notify its owner when the update is ready; Settings also provides a manual check. Compare the patch level on the phone you own rather than another device’s screenshot.

How Google organizes the security records

Google groups its security rows by affected component. Each row includes a CVE, related references, vulnerability type and severity, with updated Android Open Source Project versions where applicable. The reference prefix identifies the organization behind an entry: A- is an Android bug ID, while QC-, M-, N-, B- and U- refer to Qualcomm, MediaTek, NVIDIA, Broadcom and UNISOC.

Google says vulnerabilities in the Android Security Bulletin are required to declare Android’s latest security patch level; additional Pixel entries are not required for that declaration. Its October bulletin still says 2026-10-05 or later addresses both sets. The bulletin links official firmware images from Google Developers, while Pixel Community hosts the user-facing functional-fix details.

A practical check takes less than a minute

Open Settings, then System and Software update, and read the installed security patch level. If it is earlier than 2026-10-05, use the same page to check for an update. Confirm the exact model in About phone before matching it to a functional fix or support row.

If you compare a downloaded factory image, match its full build number to the model group above. Most owners can use the ordinary OTA path; the build strings matter when selecting a manual image. The bulletin links to separate Pixel Community notes for the full user-facing functional list.
