Galaxy Tab S12: the Ultra's screen costs more, but the S Pen is included

Samsung's October 7 launch offers two Android tablets, not a small base model: the 12.6-inch S12+ and 14.6-inch S12 Ultra. Their regional prices, separately sold keyboards, software offers, and manufacturer battery claims need to be compared on their own terms.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • The S12 lineup has a 12.6-inch Plus and a 14.6-inch Ultra; Samsung's U.S. launch announcement says both include the S Pen.
  • Samsung lists the Pro Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as separate purchases, and Adobe Photoshop's Galaxy Store exclusivity starts October 7 for at least six months.
  • The U.S. starting prices are reported as $1,199.99 and $1,399.99; Korea publishes separate price ranges by memory and storage configuration.

The S12 family starts with Plus and Ultra

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S12 launch consists of two models: the 12.6-inch Galaxy Tab S12+ and the 14.6-inch S12 Ultra. There is no smaller standard S12 in the U.S. release list. Android Authority reports starting prices of $1,199.99 for the Plus and $1,399.99 for the Ultra, with both available from October 7. The 200-dollar starting-price gap buys a larger display and the Ultra's higher tier, so the first question is whether that extra screen will be used often enough to justify the difference.

The Korean launch announcement shows why one country's price cannot stand in for another. It lists the Ultra between 1,899,700 and 3,018,400 won and the Plus between 1,549,900 and 2,069,100 won, depending on memory and storage. A buyer comparing across markets should first match the same model and capacity, then add local tax and any launch promotion. The Korean figures are not directly comparable with the U.S. starting prices without knowing which configuration is being compared.

The display difference changes how each tablet travels

Samsung lists the S12 Ultra at 14.6 inches and 5.1 millimeters thick. Samsung UK's model-specific S12+ specifications define its display as 12.6 inches (320.4 mm) full rectangle and 12.5 inches (317.8 mm) at the rounded corners. Samsung Korea's October 1 product release also gives 12.6 inches (320.4 mm), matching the U.S. launch release. An earlier read of the October 6 Korean retail notice recorded 12.4 inches, but a direct reread today no longer shows a screen-size value. The model specification and two product releases point to 12.6 inches nominal; the earlier notice is a source-text conflict, not evidence of a separate Korean panel. The current Korean notice lists the Plus at 5.3 millimeters thick and 553 grams. Both are large tablets, but the Plus is easier to fit on a small table, hold beside a textbook, or carry with a compact sleeve. The Ultra gives more room for two or three windows, a timeline, or a sheet of music. It also occupies more of a lap and desk.

The screen size is not the only difference. Samsung describes both displays as Dynamic AMOLED 2X, with up to a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,600-nit peak brightness in its product materials. These are manufacturer specifications. They do not tell us how a specific document, video, or app will look under a shop's lighting, so a store display is useful for checking glare, font size, and split-screen comfort. Buyers should test the apps they plan to use rather than rely on a diagonal measurement alone.

The S Pen is in the box; keyboard covers are not

Samsung says both S12 models ship with an S Pen. That lowers the cost of trying handwriting, markup, sketching, or selecting small screen elements compared with a tablet that sells its pen separately. The S Pen does not automatically turn either tablet into a laptop. People who type for long stretches still need a keyboard and trackpad setup, and Samsung lists its Pro Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as separate purchases.

Keyboard prices and layouts vary by country, language, and device model, according to Samsung's footnote. The Pro Keyboard includes a Galaxy AI Key, but Samsung says that key can be assigned only to select apps and needs a network connection for Bixby, Gemini, or Perplexity. The Book Cover Keyboard Slim is another option with adjustable viewing angles. Add the exact local accessory price to the tablet before treating the Ultra as a complete workstation purchase.

Photoshop has an exclusive Galaxy Store window

Samsung says Adobe Photoshop for Tablet comes preloaded in the Galaxy Picks folder and will launch exclusively through the Galaxy Store for at least six months starting October 7. The company also lists a four-month trial of Photoshop Premium Mobile with 100 monthly generative credits for eligible S12 buyers. In Korea, Samsung describes a six-month Google AI Pro benefit alongside other launch promotions. Each offer has a different provider, duration, and eligibility, so they should not be added together as a permanent part of the tablet's value.

The Photoshop exclusivity is a time-limited distribution arrangement, not a promise that the app remains Galaxy-only. Samsung's footnote says Adobe may launch it in other app stores after the six-month period. The four-month Premium trial also ends; a user who depends on a paid editing feature should compare the ongoing subscription cost before choosing a tablet. The Android Authority launch article covers the hardware and price, while Samsung's own footnote is the source for this software window.

The battery headline describes video playback

Samsung lists up to 23 hours of video playback for the S12 Ultra and up to 21 hours for the S12+. Its U.S. footnote describes a local 720p video test in the default player at 162 nits, with Wi-Fi and mobile networks turned off. Samsung says results vary with settings, usage, and other factors. That test is useful for comparing the company's stated method across its models, but it is not a promise of a 21- or 23-hour workday with video meetings, drawing, downloads, and wireless accessories.

The 45-watt adapter needed for the listed roughly 95-minute full charge is sold separately. Buyers should check whether their existing charger supports the required output and cable, or include the adapter in the local cost. The tablet's thin body and large display may suit a desk routine, but video playback in airplane mode will not reproduce that routine. No independent battery test was included in the launch coverage used here.

Offers and configurations depend on the country

Samsung's Korean newsroom says the tablets went on sale there on October 7 and lists different price ranges for the Ultra and Plus based on memory and storage. It also describes content subscriptions, accessory discounts, and a review-reward promotion running through October 31. Those terms are local and time-limited. The U.S. launch announcement emphasizes included S Pen, six-month Google AI Pro, and Photoshop availability. A shopper should not assume an offer in one country is included in another country's box.

The U.S. model's starting price reported by Android Authority is not the price of every capacity or keyboard bundle. A Korean Plus offer with a subscription benefit is not a U.S. tablet price either. Before checkout, match the model, RAM and storage, Wi-Fi or cellular option, keyboard, charger, taxes, and promotional trial. If the exact capacity is not displayed on the store page, leave the comparison unresolved until the retailer identifies it.

When the Ultra makes sense

The Plus is the more practical choice for someone who wants a large screen for reading, handwritten notes, video, and occasional keyboard use but still carries the tablet between rooms or classes. The Ultra fits people who regularly keep several work surfaces visible, draw on the largest panel, or need the 14.6-inch area for a specific creative app. The included S Pen helps both models with handwriting; it does not erase the size and price gap.

A buyer can make the choice by testing the screen and pricing the full setup. Hold each size in the posture where it will be used, check the apps and keyboard layout, then add the separate adapter and keyboard if needed. Confirm the local configuration and the end date of any trial. The S12 launch gives each model a clear role, but the value depends on whether the larger screen or the bundled software changes a real daily task.
